Workshops for Writers-Jan. 8: Writing History: Crafting an Interesting (and True!) Story

Join historian Tanya Roth from 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 8, for a history-writing workshop hosted by the St. Louis Writers Guild. This free online workshop will be live-streamed on Zoom.

Tanya will share her experiences writing about history both in articles and in her book, Her Cold War: Women in the US Military, 1945-1980. In particular, Tanya will speak about how the work evolved as she wrote, highlighting the important role revision played in helping her craft her book.

Tanya Roth believes that if you can write about history just so, it becomes more real and more relevant for everyone. She earned her history PhD from Washington University in St. Louis and teaches high school and middle school history at Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS) in St. Louis, Missouri. Her research has been recognized by the American Association of University Women, and in 2019 an early version of Her Cold War received the Society for Military History’s Coffman First Manuscript Prize. Tanya’s writing has been published in The Washington Post, History News Network, and Public Seminar. Her Cold War: Women in the US Military, 1945-1980, explains how women gained a permanent role in national defense after World War II, defined as equals with servicemen. In the following decades, servicewomen and their advocates continually fought to redefine “equality,” laying the groundwork for women’s service today.
